I always, always try to patronize an indy place over a chain--from coffee houses to fine dining restaurants, from clothing boutiques to wine shops. If the independent eateries go away, how will you ever know the local flavors and talents and passions?

I couldn't agree more. While I, too, make more meals at home, when we do go out, we patronize locally-owned restaurants. Spending less on meals out for us means going out less often. It doesn't mean eating at national chains.

I could not agree more with your opinion - I just wish there was a way to get others to understand. In these times when everyone is experiencing some financial impact we often forget that we are not alone - and those who are in the independent restaurant business are feeling it double. Not only are they experiencing it personally, but in their business as well - and without the deep pockets of many restaurant chains. Yet - above all else they remain committed to their patrons and continue to strive to offer them the same dining experience in good times and bad. When so many of us are experiencing the impact of "re-packaging" with smaller quantities of many consumer items at "the same great price" it is nothing short of amazing that these restaurants can continue to provide such pleasure. Even more important is your reminder of all that these restaurants and their owners contribute to our community, and not only in tax revenue. As someone who has had the privilege to get to know many of them, I am still amazed by all that they do. One merely needs to read any of the columns or community calendars to see how often one of these restaurant or another is participating in a charitable event, serving meals to the homeless, or donating services to name a few. The impact of what they do is immeasurable and they do it without question, rarely getting the recognition they deserve. Cincinnati is very lucky indeed to have them and would lose so much more than tax dollars if they were not here. My husband and I will continue our support of them and experience what we consider to be "dining out" - without them we'd rather stay home. Thanks for reminding us all!
