Cincinnati Restaurant Receives National Recognition (Which restaurant will surprise you.)
The cover story [edit: only certain covers; the mail subscriber version has an apple on the cover] in the October issue of Gourmet magazine features 126 American restaurants worth your money. The honorees range from ultra-expensive restaurants of international fame to places you have never heard of. The article is subdivided by region, the Midwest appearing last. Nine Midwest restaurants received recognition as being places worthy of your spending your own money to dine there, four in Chicago, two in Minneapolis, one in Wisconsin, one in South Dakota and one in Cincinnati.
Which Cincinnati restaurant, you ask? None other than my favorite daytime hangout — Tucker’s Restaurant located at 1637 Vine Street in the heart of Over the Rhine! [Article not yet online; link forthcoming when available.]
Other recipients included well known eateries Alinea (Chicago), Central Michel Richard and Komi (Washington, D.C), Bacchanalia (Atlanta), Grammercy Tavern (New York), and Cyrus (Sonoma County). Each of those restaurants receives international press almost weekly (and has a PR professional or five on retainer). Pretty heady company for our fairly unknown gem.
Congratulations to Joe and Carla Tucker! Please make it a point to stop by, enjoy a meal and congratulate the Tuckers in person.
Now the whole world knows what I have known for years; I wonder if I will still be able to get a seat at the counter?

I went for the first time this weekend, and while the shrimp & grits were pretty good, I was a bit disappointed in the cleanliness of the place. Our table was not wiped off (and I noticed that others who sat down near us had the same problem). This is a big deal for many people, but it can be easily remedied. Also, as an FYI to anyone who has not yet dined there, be prepared for a leisurely-paced meal. With only one cook in the tiny kitchen, it takes a while to prepare things. We sat for nearly 45 minutes before we received our food. Perhaps they misplaced our order? I’m not sure, but I did notice that a few people who sat down after us got their food before we did.

To all who offered congratulations and wishes to the Tucker family, thank you. I have read each of your comments to Joe and Carla. They asked me to express their appreciation to each of you for your interest and support.
This blog is not a restaurant review site, nor is there anything scientific about what I choose to write about or when I choose to write. I write about things that move me when I feel like writing. Darius, perhaps your comment would be more appropriate on Wine Me, Dine Me as a comment to this post or the review post linked therein. It will get appropriate exposure and reaction there.
That having been said, I will respond to one aspect of Darius’s comment. The facilities at Tucker’s are, first and foremost, old. And they look their age. The other thing those facilities are is clean. I can personally attest to the effort the Tuckers make every day to assure that old equipment, building and contents are scrupulously clean.

Hey, Darius– I was there this Sunday too– it was packed in a way I hadn’t seen it packed in a long time, particularly with the rain. We, too, had a little bit of a wait. I honestly think they were overwhelmed with the attention, when the prior weekend was really slow.
As far as the cleanliness, simply asking your server to wipe the table will cure that problem. It’s usually not a problem– and I eat there nearly every Sunday.
